Steroids can have lasting effects after using stops

While violent mood swings, also known as roid-rage, can often accompany steroid use, few people realize that the steroids can lead to lasting effects on the mind and body, even after use has stopped.

“Basically, when an athlete is taking steroids, they are potentially disturbing a very delicate biochemical balance,” Dr. Scott Stanislaw, a sports physician with Fondren Orthopedic Clinic in Kingwood, said.

“This can lead to very serious side effects.”

While side effects are not always a guarantee, Stanislaw compares taking the risk to playing Russian roulette.

“There is no way to tell whether you will have major problems,” Stanislaw said, “but I’ve seen studies where 25 percent of athletes using them have extreme emotional side effects.”

Emotional effects can also appear after an athlete has stopped using steroids. In some cases the user may experience even worse side effects after use than while on the substance.

Physically, the drug can lead to infertility problems in both male and females, acne, liver abnormalities and bone defects to name a few.

Stanislaw also warns that those who obtain illegal steroids are also in danger of receiving a product that may or may not live up to its billing.

“A lot of them are scams,” Stanislaw said. “Anytime you have to go to the black market for something, it’s not a good thing. You just don’t know what you are getting.”
