SAN ANTONIO – A large contingent of Deer Park Parks & Recreation summer track and field athletes brought the curtain down on their summer campaign by competing at this past weekend’s Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s Games of Texas at Gustafson Stadium.

Among the strongest showings took place in the 18-and-under division of the boys’ high jump. That’s where Travis Barnes captured third place with a jump of six feet, two inches off the state championship leap, scored by Sean Masek of Austin.

Also clearing six feet along with Barnes was Joshua Cravens, Garland’s Robert Malczewski and Daniel Carr of the Temple Flyers.

In the distance running events, 14-and-under competitor Grant Mobley finished among the state’s ten fastest two-milers when the youngster scored the time of 11:15.45, clinching seventh place in the 3200-meter run. Winning the state championship was Trevor Walker of the McKinney Track Club. He held off the field of 20 with the time of 10:36.55. Oliver Gunther of the Cedar Park Track Club was five seconds back at 10:41.14.

Grant’s brother, Ty Mobley, had an equally strong showing in the 12-and-under shot put. Mobley, competing in Flight 2, recorded a toss of just over 31 feet. When the last toss was in the books, Mobley captured the state’s ninth-best toss among a field of 29 athletes. McAllen’s Nicolas Garcia edged out Mobley for eighth place by a mere eight inches.

Winning the state championship for the 12-and-under shot put was Izaiah Masters and his toss of 35 feet, 5 inches. Fort Worth’s Tielar Richard’s earned runner-up status at 35 feet even.

Ty Mobley also competed in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 6:26.94, good for sixth place in Heat 1. Jackson Zivney conquered the state crown with the strong time of 5:26.79.

Mobley’s teammate Blake Love fashioned the 16th-best run with the time of 5:58.21 in the 1600. In Heat 2, Love’s time was good for 15th place out of 18 competitors. That was the same heat where Zivney came from. Ninety-nine percent of the sub-six minute times came from Heat 2.

Love also tried his fortunes in the 800-meter run where he was 17th overall, courtesy of the time of 2:49.79. For his heat, that clocking was good for sixth place. The state championship went to Temple Flyers athlete Deion Hardy and his 2:26.87 run.

For the boys’ 10-and-under division in the shot put, Jacob Logan finished 18th overall with his heave of 18 feet, 6 inches. For his flight, Logan’s distance was good for seventh place. The state championship went to Jerry Chandler and his throw of 24 feet, 10 inches.

Deer Park was well-represented in the shot put because in the 14-and-under division, Parker DeShazo collected 20th place with his toss of 31 feet, 1 inch. The state title went to Marco Vergara and his heave of 49 feet, 5 inches. As a footnote, the state record in the age group goes all the way back to 1964.

DeShazo also competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing 22nd overall with his run of 58.23 seconds. For his heat, he was third.

Action in the 110-meter hurdles had Julian Leiga placing third in his heat and 12th overall with his effort of 16.55 seconds, but it wasn’t quite good enough to earn a berth in the state finals.

Kevin Moore secured the 19th-best time in the 10-and-under 1600-meter run. He went home with the time of 6:47.64. Tyler Zivney won the crown in 5:37.00. Bryson Thompson’s 2:59.59 run in the 10-and-under division for the 800-meter run placed him 18th overall. Zivney won another state crown, thanks to his time of 2:33.63.

Brian Carter’s 1600-meter run in the 14-and-under division had the youngster claiming 13th place with his time of 5:16.73. The time of 4:50.81 won the top prize.

On the ladies side for Deer Park, Shelbi Kershaw had the strongest showing when she claimed the state’s sixth-best effort in the 16-and-under triple jump. She won Flight 1 with a jump of 31 feet, 7 inches. Alex Keyes of the Plano Cheetahs cornered the state crown with the effort of 35 feet, 8.5 inches.

Jessica O’Brien nabbed 21st in the 100-meter hurdles for the 14-and-under set. She was clocked at 19.67 seconds, but it didn’t quite qualify her for the state finals.

Hannah Booher saw her 2007 state record removed from the record books, following the strong run by Molly Tucker, who ran the 1600-meter run for the 12-and-under group in 5:23.32. The previous record was 5:33.14. Booher was in the field again but it was nothing like her 2007 performance as she had to settle for the time of 6:08.38. But out of 28 competitors, it still placed her 12th overall.

Shannon Crosby owned the 21st overall best time in the 300-meter hurdles for the 14-and-under age group. She was clocked at 59.28 seconds.
