New fitness program offered to residents in NW Harris County

Individuals who want a vigorous physical workout, a chance to grow mentally and business networking opportunities might want to consider attending the “Indoctrination” course of Legion Fitness and Development.

LFD was the brainchild of a few men who had a dream of offering participants a holistic approach to fitness by incorporating the mental and physical aspects into a program

One of those men was Fred Stow, who’s involved in the corporate, marketing and legal side of LFD. He became involved with SEAL Physical Training in 1998 where he met instructors Dave Casale and Jeff Ehrich.

“I always thought there could be something more than the Monday through Friday workout program,” Stow said.

When Stow ran into Casale over a year ago, they decided to put the plan into action with LFD.

“The program is physical fitness at its core, along with professional networking and mental fitness,” Stow said. “We don’t consider ourselves just a boot camp program.”

To enter the program, those interested must complete a two-week, mandatory Indoctrination course.

According to Stow, the Indoctrination course will include a variety of activities and workouts: calisthenics, jogging/running and water activities.

“Our program is all about attitude,” Stow said. “It’s for people at all fitness levels, but with a goal-oriented and positive attitude.

Indoctrination will begin September 8 at the North Harris County Family YMCA located on 17125 Ella Blvd. Workouts begin at 5:15 a.m., last about 90 minutes a day and are rain or shine. The course will be challenging, but instructors will divide people into groups based on fitness levels.

After successful completion of the Indoctrination, members will then be a part of The Garrison, a program that Stow said is ongoing and showcases the principles that makes LFD stand apart from other programs.

“We’ll still have the workouts Monday through Friday, but they’ll be voluntary and we’ll focus on topics like nutrition, injury prevention, how to stretch, etc.,” Stow said.

He said at least once a month they would offer a weekend activity such as a bike ride, hike or canoe trip. Stow said he wants The Garrison to become a “third place” for people which means the physical location to which an individual dedicates a significant amount of personal time.

“The Garrison is the long-term part of it — a community of like-minded people,” Stow said.

The professional networking side of it, Stow said, will include mixers where the group can meet and converse for about an hour. The first mixer will be in September.

Stow said in the future, the founders hope to have their own physical facility and multiple locations around the Houston area.

Casale is one of the instructors for the Indoctrination course and said the goal at the end of the day is not to see how many people they can go beat up.

“Jeff (Ehrich) and I both have military special operations backgrounds,” Casale said. “Jeff was Marine Force Recon and I was a Navy SEAL. That gives us credibility. The goals here are about committing to a process. We’re here to help people develop the foundation for a long-term relationship of growth in physical fitness and wellness. It’s about knowing when to push and knowing when to back off.”

Participants in the program are encouraged to work as a team and help a team member if he or she is struggling.

“We don’t want someone not come back because they couldn’t finish the program,” Stow said. “This could be a life-changing experience.”
