ACC to offer fall jewelry course

Due to the influence of jewelry in our lives, it is rare to find a person who does not wear some form of it.
Throughout history, it has been used to display social status, relay affection, elevate moods, show ownership and organizational membership and serve a variety of other functions.
For an artist or aspiring artist, making jewelry can become the ultimate way to express creativity and make a lasting impact on the person who wears it.
This fall, Alvin Community College will offer introductory and advanced courses in jewelry making with metals.
Taught by Jens Jorgensen, the classes will teach students how to create all types of jewelry, such as pendants, necklaces, rings, earrings, etc., from copper, nickel, silver and other metals using various techniques.
“Design is going to be a big factor in how I teach,” Jorgensen said. “Art is about personal expression and making a piece of jewelry should reflect this.”
According to Jorgensen, he sees jewelry as a combination of the arts of metalsmithing and sculpting.
“When you make jewelry, you are really creating small sculptures,” he stated.
Jorgensen, who has a bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts from Sam Houston State University, works for the Houston Community College Central Fine Arts Department.
The jewelry making classes are listed as “Art Metals I” and “Art Metals II” in the Fall 2008 Credit Class Schedule and are offered Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.
The ACC Art Department is considering offering an introductory jewelry making class on Saturdays during the spring semester if enough interest is expressed.
