Regents point way on ACC budget

Updated: 07.30.08
The Alvin Community College Board of Regents provided final direction to administrators to prepare the 2008-2009 Maintenance and Operations Budget at a regular meeting on July 24.

The proposed 2008-2009 budget of $23,132,358 represents a 3.99 percent increase over last year and will include operational funds for: a college academic advisor at Manvel High School; a part-time college academic advisor at Dawson High School in Pearland; instructors for polysomnography, respiratory care and psychology; renovations of student services reconfiguration in Building A; an increase from part-time to full-time recruiter and a two percent salary schedule adjustment.

The budget is funded by three main sources, including state appropriations, tuition and fees and local tax revenues. In July, the Brazoria County Appraisal District approved the net taxable value of the district at $5,872,407,865 as compared to $5,294,383,436 last year.

Due to the growth in the college district, board members recommended to reduce the total effective tax rate to .199832 per $100 valuation, which is .010448 lower than last year’s rate of .210280. If approved in August, this will be the sixth consecutive year that the ACC Board of Regents has lowered the tax rate.

The proposed total effective tax rate includes the debt service tax of .022503 which will be used to cover the cost of the new Science/Health Science Building.

During the meeting, regents also approved: a payment for the new Art Building; resale of two trust properties; final 2007-2008 budget revisions; financial report ending June 30; and check register.
