Three dead in head-on collision
By Jamie Nash
Three people were killed Tuesday afternoon when a pickup and an 18-wheeler collided head-on on Texas 105 near Cleveland, according to officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety and Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts. The collision occurred a little after 2 p.m. on the overpass west of Penny Road near where the highway intersects with Old Highway 105.
Trooper Derek Leitner said the Dodge 1500 extended cab pickup was eastbound when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the center line and collided with the big rig, which was westbound.
“The pickup’s front seat passenger was ejected,” Leitner said. “All three occupants of the truck, including a female driver and two male passengers were deceased.”
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not physically injured, Leitner said.
Speed was not believed to be a factor, he said, and the precise cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Metts conducted an inquest and Metcalf Funeral Directors transported the deceased to the Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Conroe for autopsy.
The investigation showed the driver of the pickup was wearing a seatbelt, but the passengers were not.
The Splendora Fire Department and Montgomery County EMS responded to the crash, along with DPS and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The identities are withheld pending notification of next of kin.
