Eye on Big Brother: Dowling takes HOH
Magnolia’s MacDonald once again safe from eviction nomination
The Potpourri Staff Report
It was a shaky start for the Tuesday, Aug. 3 episode of “Big Brother 10” - literally as the reality show contestants competed for Head of Household by hanging from the ledge of a shaking building facade.
The building facade was set up in the studio with a padded street below. The contestants were asked to hang on to the ledge of the building as it was periodically tilted, shaken, and through strong winds which blew debris such as paper and dust on to the housemates.
Keesha Smith, 29, the waitress from Burbank, Calif., did not compete in the competition as she was last week’s Head of Household.
Magnolia resident, Gerald “Jerry” MacDonald was the first to fall from the ledge.
After more than two hours into the contest, all of the men had fallen from the ledge, including Jessie Godderz, the 22-year-old bodybuilder from Huntington Beach, Calif. Even 53-year-old Renny Martyn, the hair salon owner from Metairie, La., was able to hang onto the building longer than the men in the contest.
In the end, it was a battle between April Dowling, 30, a finance manager from Higley, Ariz., and Michelle Costa, 28, a real estate agent from Cumberland, R.I.
After holding on for 2 hours and 40 minutes, Dowling was able to hang on the longest. Before Costa fell from the fake building’s facade, Dowling promised Costa she would not nominate her for eviction and she said she would keep Godderz in the house.
It was an emotional loss for Costa as she was looking forward to taking Head of Household and seeing the studio home’s master bedroom decorated with photos of her family and receiving a letter from her mother.
“God love you baby,” MacDonald told Costa after her fall. “You’ve got a lot of heart.”
The new HOH, Dowling was emotional when she was able to take over the master bedroom seeing photos of her mother and father, as well as receiving a letter from her twin sister who is pregnant. Dowling said it was hard not being with her twin at this time.
Dowling had her sights set on nominating Robert "Memphis" Garrett, 25, a mixologist and party planner from Los Angeles, as soon as she achieved the HOH title.
And for a while, it seemed it was going to be a battle between the blonds - new HOH Dowling and former HOH Smith - after Dowling discovered Smith and Garrett talking to each other.
Although MacDonald’s name was brought up as a potential nomination for eviction, the Magnolia resident once again remained out of the nomination list.
In the end, Dowling put Garrett and Godderz on the chopping block for eviction from the BB10 house this week.
Dowling said Garrett has been a target for eviction from the beginning of the reality show after winning a “luxury prize” (a classic car) during a contest.
Dowling told Godderz she nominated him because not only is he a physically strong competitor, but strong mentally as well.
Godderz’s friend, Costa, said Dowling had told her she would not nominate Godderz from the house but that Dowling assured her Garrett was the target for elimination. Costa said she hopes Dowling’s plan works.
