Local teachers participate in math training

Teachers from Houston and Katy took part in educational training offered by math teachers of Phillips Exeter Academy July 28-August 1.

Teachers from school districts in the Houston area, including Klein and Cy-Fair, participated in a week-long training that offered them insight on how to make math more meaningful.

The training took place at Seven Lakes High School in Katy. Participants met with four math faculty from PEA to learn fun ways to teach math in their respective schools.

The workshop focused on algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry and using the Geometer’s Sketchpad to integrate algebra and geometry.

The academy is part of the Exeter Mathematics Institute, a privately-funded training seminar for math teachers. It began in 1991 at an independent secondary school in Exeter, NH. Since 1997, EMI instructors travel nationwide every summer, promoting innovative instruction to high school educators.

“What this program is really about is promoting good mathematics,” said EMI founder and director Eric Bergofksy. “The week-long workshops offer an intensive exploration of the kinds of hands-on, student-centered techniques and applications that define Exeter’s mathematics curriculum, which challenges participants to work through problems, instead of simply memorizing answers.”

Bergofsky said the PEA math instructors have faith in their methodology.

“Teaching new techniques often means changing the way teachers approach mathematics,” he said. “It’s a philosophy of how you can motivate 35 challenged students or 12 highly-motivated ones. It’s the same system applied, no matter the student.”
