City of Conroe initiates drought contingency plan
Conroe City Administrator Jerry S. McGuire announces Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan will go into effect immediately. Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan refers to mild water shortage conditions.
Stage 1: Mild Water Shortage Conditions
(a) Triggering events – City Administrator shall initiate a Stage 1 Drought Response when:
(1) The total daily water demand equals or exceeds 90% of the system’s production capacity for 3 consecutive days, and
(2) Weather conditions are considered to be in a drought classification and an extended pattern of hot and dry conditions is forecast.
(b) Response: Upon the initiation of a Stage 1 Drought Response the City Administrator shall:
(1) order that all operations of the City adhere to water use restrictions prescribed for a Stage 2 Drought Response; and
(2) request all water customers to practice voluntary water conservation and to minimize or discontinue water use for non-essential purposes
Jerry S. McGuire, City Administrator said, “The city can produce approximately 13.7 million gallons of water a day. Demand on July 29, 2008, hit 15 million gallons of water, July 28th totaled to 14 million gallons of water and 13.8 million of gallons of water utilized for July 27, 2008. We are able to manipulate our system to produce a bit more but, that is a short term fix. We are running many wells 24 hours a day.
We put one new well online and a 2nd new well is coming soon. We also are planning for several other wells to be drilled in the next few years. The last time we activated a Contingency Drought Plan was 8 years ago. It is without question that a good rain would take us out of this condition and would prevent us from possibly activating Stage 2 moderate water shortage conditions. For details about Stage 2 and 3 of the Contingency Drought Plan please go to the city website at www.cityofconroe.org and refer to the home page.”
City Administrator Jerry S. McGuire, will call a termination for this plan when all of the conditions listed as triggering events have ceased to exist for a period of 3 consecutive days. The Drought Contingency Plan in its entirety can be read on the city web site at www.cityofconroe.org on the home page and citizens may call (936) 522-3000 for information.
