Police nab five people on drug charges
Five people are in custody following a drug bust in the early hours of Saturday, July 19, at a home at 708 S. Franklin. Those arrested are Bakari Brown, Tiffany Easley, Tiffany Hawthorne, Larree McWilliams and William Hebert.
According to Detective Scott Felts, during the late hours of July 18, he petitioned Justice of the Peace Peggy Dunn for a search warrant regarding illegal drug activity at the house.
Felts said he had been instructed by Assistant Chief Patterson to conduct an investigation into complaints received about possible drug dealing at the residence.
“The police department has been getting complaints for over a month regarding the high amount of traffic coming and going from the residence,” said Felts. “Surveillance showed that people were coming and going from the residence at all hours of the night. Most of the people the police officers stopped leaving the residence had criminal histories involving drugs.”
Cleveland Police Department was able to make numerous arrests of persons coming from the residence who were in possession of crack cocaine.
When entering the residence, Bakari Brown reportedly began to run from the officers. He was able to run approximately 30 feet until being tackled by CPD officers. Brown attempted to fight but his attempt was in vain, said Felts.
“The officers assisting me with the search warrant were on top of their game. We knew going into this that it was very likely that Bakari Brown had a handgun and we were focusing on officer safety. All officers involved did a great job and I was very pleased with the outcome. Due to the officers’ fast actions upon entering the residence, we were able to preserve the evidence and secure every one within seconds,” said Felts.
A search of the residence revealed a 9 mm. handgun, drug paraphernalia and over 60 grams of cocaine.
Bakari Brown has a prior history of drug charges and Detective Felts said he will attempt to pursue both state and federal indictments against Brown.
Felts stated the entry team consisted of himself and Officers Mike Kolek, Chad Whitton, Steven Hodges, Jacob Ladwig, Zack Harkness, Kevin Potter, Tommy Turner and Paul Lowery.
The charges for those arrested are as follows:
• Bakari Brown – Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a fire by a felon.
• Tiffany Easley – Possession of a Controlled Substance
• Tiffany Hawthorne – Possession of a Controlled Substance, Fail to identify by a fugitive.
• William Hebert – Possession of Marijuana
• Larree McWilliams – Possession of Marijuana
Felts stated he would like to thank both Assistant Chief Henry Patterson and Cleveland City Council for their continued support and provided resources to conduct these types of investigations.
“We are fortunate that we are provided with funding, surveillance equipment, K-9 officer, narcotics officers and undercover officers,” said Felts. “Without these resources, this investigation would have never gotten off the ground.”
